Only the Bodhisattva Ideal can carry us beyond ourselves and the world - and back again into them on a totally different basis

Here we are in this life, in this world, with all its troubles and moments of beauty coming into being.  What are we to do with our life, who are we to be?  These questions can feel at times a burden, at...

The Buddhist Centre Online Highlights from 2021

By Centre Team on Sun, 26 Dec, 2021 - 12:58

2021 has been another rollercoaster of a year: with the three of the traditional ‘four sights’ of old age, sickness and death an ever present backdrop. But 2021 has also been interspersed with moments of beauty, generosity, connectedness and hope.

Our team has been busy this year keeping the fourth sight—the Dharma—alive; fostering community—sangha—at a time of continued uncertainty.

Looking back over the year, here are some of our highlights from the year that was 2021:

Sub35 Online Day Retreat: Why Join An Order?

By vajratara on Wed, 14 Jul, 2021 - 11:35

Saturday 4 September

Why join an Order? Isn’t enough to simply practice Buddhism without joining anything? Vajratara and Karunadhi from the women’s ordination team along with Dharmacharinis from the young people’s steering group, will communicate a glimpse of the vision of the Order and the potential of spiritual friendship. The Order is more than it appears to be, and to realise that, we must also realise that we are more than we appear to be…

I hope we all remember how migrant labourers suffered during the sudden lockdown last year in India. The first thing that comes to my mind are images of ‘tired feet’ and ’hunger’. I can not believe millions of feet had to walk thousands of miles to get their homes, and many of them never made it.

One of my inspirations from India is Ashif Shaikh, the founder of ‘Jan Sahas’ (‘People’s...

Young women's weekend retreat: The Cremation Ground & the Skull Cup of Wisdom (ONLINE)

By SophieAnn on Sun, 31 Jan, 2021 - 09:11

An exciting online opportunity for young women, aged 18 to 30.

Friday 30 April 30 to Sunday 2 May.

The ancient Indian cremation ground is a symbol for any crucial situation where we meet impermanence, death, aloneness and fear. It is also a symbol of transformation, a place where death meets life and life meets death. A place where great yogis and dakinis gather at night in darkenss and secrecy, meditating, dancing, embracing and drinking from the skull cup of wisdom. A place of liberated...

Reflections from Akasajoti and Varadhi - Turning Arrows into Flowers: Day 6

By Sadayasihi on Wed, 20 May, 2020 - 11:01

Here’s a delightful conversation between friends: Akasajoti, based in London, UK and the recently ordained Varadhi, in Melbourne, Australia!

Akasajoti and Varadhi explore their favourite mind-training slogans – ‘of the two witnesses, hold the principal one’ and ‘liberate yourself by examining and analysing’ – looking at how empowering it can be to bring greater honesty and self-awareness into their lives.
