Working with Doubt and Limiting Habits

By Windhorse Publi... on Wed, 13 Mar, 2024 - 19:00

Things are buzzing at the publishing house. We’re in the final stretch, putting the finishing touches on covers, endorsements, proofreading, printing, and marketing for two exciting books set to hit shelves in April and May. Plus, we’re gearing up to make some of our older titles available through print-on-demand, ensuring they’re always within reach. Watch this space for more updates in the weeks to come.

And amidst all this hustle and bustle, we’re delighted to mark the 50th anniversary of Windhorse Publications...

Windhorse Publications turns 50

By Liz Evers on Thu, 25 Jan, 2024 - 12:30

This year is going to be significant for Windhorse Publications. After 50 years in operation, we have a lot to celebrate!

At first, its newsletters and journals were published under the name Friends of the Western Buddhist Order. It then became Windhorse Press in the early 1970s when it began publishing full length books, starting with The Essence...

Catch up with 'The Subtle Art of Caring' book launch

By Windhorse Publi... on Wed, 13 Dec, 2023 - 10:00

Three weeks ago we introduced The Subtle Art of Caring with author River Wolton online. In this interesting conversation between Dhammamegha and the author we explored themes contained in the book such as:

Idealism and Altruistic Activity - River reflected on the tension between idealism and the shadow side of idealism, reflecting on the concept of becoming a bodhisattva and the potential for idealism in spiritual practice.

Reframing Language and Perception - The video introduces the concept of ‘respair’, a forgotten word...

To hear, read, and recite..with a single mind

By Caroline I P on Tue, 24 Oct, 2023 - 16:09

Greater still are the merits of those who hear, read and recite it with single mind, explain it clearly and distinctly to the people in the Great Assembly, and practise it as taught.

The White Lotus sutra

On a recent solitary retreat in a cabin in the Finnish countryside, in the midst of quiet countryside and mild autumn days, I spent a period every day for two weeks reading aloud the whole of the White Lotus Sutra.

Back in 1970 Bhante gave a series of talks...

Friendship: Duty, Delight and Freedom

By Caroline I P on Sat, 17 Apr, 2021 - 12:50

What kind of friend are you? What kind of friend would you like to be?

Is there any limitation to the heights that faithful friendship can reach?

Explore the possibilities of friendship with brothers and sisters in the sangha, through looking at traditional understandings of friendship in society and the spiritual life.

We will draw primarily on The Duties of Brotherhood in Islam seminar, with supporting material from the seminar on the Sigalavada Sutta. Both texts were studied by Sangharakshita in 1983. With The Duties of Brotherhood in Islam, he took...

Sangharakshita’s Three Jewels trilogy back in print

By Windhorse Publi... on Wed, 27 Jan, 2021 - 12:08

Sangharakshita’s Three Jewels trilogy (Who is the Buddha?, What is the Dharma? and What is the Sangha?) is essential reading for anyone with an interest in Buddhism. It provides an elucidation of the three central principles on which Buddhism is based: the Buddha, who represents the principle of ‘awakening’; the Dharma, the teachings and practices that cultivate awakening; and the Sangha, the principle of spiritual friendship. For quite some time, both Who is the Buddha? and What is the Sangha? have been out of print. We’re pleased...
