Seattle Sangha gathers to mark Bhante’s passing

From Sangharakshita Memorial Space on Wed, 31 Oct, 2018 - 04:05

Tonight the Seattle Sangha gathered to honor the passing of our beloved teacher with meditation, a threefold puja and chanting of the Padmasambhava and Amitabha mantras. As part of the metta bhavana we brought to mind all the beings whose lives had been affected by Bhante’s life and teaching. We send our love to all.

Gone but never forgotten

I will always be grateful for the kind mentoring and encouragement you gave to help me find my own voice to communicate the Dharma. For me, your work will remain an inspirational finger that points to the moon and will continue to influence my work and my Dharma life.

Dear Bhante

Thank you for coming into this world to learn and share all you have shared. You were my first real contact with Buddhism and through your writings, talks and retreat centres your work on this earth has, cheered, challenged and changed me. Thank you. My favourite poem of yours is The Six Elements Speak. Goodbye Dear Bhante

Bhante's last hours; Vigil and funeral arrangements

From Order Connection on Tue, 30 Oct, 2018 - 22:22

Dear Order members,

It has been very moving today to hear of the expressions of love and gratitude for Bhante Urgyen Sangharakshita from all corners of our Triratna world and beyond.

We would like to let you know something about the time shortly before Bhante’s death. Paramartha, Suvajra, Yashodeva and Sanghadasa were present with him in a single room in the hospital. The atmosphere was very still despite the usual sounds of busy hospital...

Carrying the Flame

From Sangharakshita Memorial Space on Tue, 30 Oct, 2018 - 21:22

Like so many friends today, I am absorbing and reflecting on the passing of my teacher Urgyen Sangharakshita (Bhante). Only a week ago I was at Adhisthana, Bhante’s home, working with the amazing people from Friends of the Sangharakshita Library. Having Danasamudra passing on Bhante’s heartfelt appreciation for the work that we were doing in his memorial library, was so touching as was his emphasis on her passing this appreciation to us. He stressed the importance of this library and his legacy...

Sangharakshita Memorial

Tue, 30 Oct, 2018 - 21:16[edit]

I first met Sangharakshita at the newly established Buddhist Centre at Kemp Town, Brighton in the early 1970’s. It was located in a small detached house not far from the seafront.  There  were less than 10 people there but I could not join the group, because I was on leave from Hong Kong where I lived and worked. Sangharakshita told us he had previously joined the English Sangha Trust, but felt that wearing the Robe would not have been helpful in spreading The Dhamma in the current English social context. ( Some had tried, but had either disrobed or returned to Asia).

After Shrine dedication in Dusseldorf, Germany

It was just three weeks ago I met Banthe. We talked about his latest writings about Islam, about the EBU congress 1991 in Berlin, Ole Nydal, Ayya Khema, and he even remembered when he did the Shrine dedication ceremony for our little group in Dusseldorf, Germany. This was 2007 when this photo was taken.

At the end of your chat there was a knock at the door. I stood up and said...

Gratitude to Bhante

From Sangharakshita Memorial Space on Tue, 30 Oct, 2018 - 19:49

Our spiritual teacher, Urgyen Sangharakshita has died. I don´t feel sad (at least not now), just immensely grateful for the courageous, intelligent, and generous life he lived. I had the fortune to meet with him just a couple of months ago along with a group of Mexican friends and he was so welcoming, relaxed, and friendly to us. His teachings have created the context for the whole of my life and I will proudly continue to practise and share them to...

First meditation for Bhante in Mexico City

From Sangharakshita Memorial Space on Tue, 30 Oct, 2018 - 19:05

Mexico city woke up with the news about our teacher’s dead. This is a pic of their first meditation this morning for bhante. Many centre’s around the world are meditating, chanting and doing puja, Mexico City is only one of many holding events.
