The Power of Desire

From Sheffield Buddhist Centre on Wed, 24 Jul, 2019 - 00:00
Vadanya begins the new theme with a talk on desire: how to really want to move towards Enlightenment. He introduces the Bodhicaryavatara, Santideva's legendary text on the guide to the path of awakening, which forms the basis for this series of talks. What attitudes must we develop if we are to begin on this path? By starting with desire and cultivating the five viniyatas (object-determining mental states) we can achieve any goal we choose. Part 1 in the 'Path to Awakening' Sangha night series at Sheffield Buddhist Centre. Points for reflection and discussion: How does it feel to reflect on your future, wiser self? How good would it be to become like this? What immediate goal do you want to achieve, spiritually or otherwise? Recorded at Sheffield Buddhist Centre 23.07.19

Death of Karunabala

From Order Connection on Tue, 23 Jul, 2019 - 15:21

Dear Order members,

I am writing with some very sad news about Karunabala. She took her life on Saturday 20th July,  in her home in Hastings. She was found on Monday by a Mitra friend who worked with her in her antiques shop in Hastings.

Karunabala was 57 years old, and leaves two sons, Alfie and Henry, whom she adored, and her beloved dog, Padma.

She was ordained privately by Padmavajri, and publicly by Parami at Adhisthana in December 2015. Her yidam is Padmasambhava, with whom...

Understanding Paṭicca-samuppāda

From Shabda Articles on Tue, 23 Jul, 2019 - 12:11

This text disappeared from these pages when Kevin, former Satyadhana, closed his account at BCO

In view of the fact that several posts referring to this article are there and because of what I think is the importance of the article in collective Order debate, I am reposting it here. I have asked Kevin’s permission to go ahead with this.

Regards,

Naravira

From Adhisthana Kula on Sun, 21 Jul, 2019 - 12:02

On July 21st 2019, The Observer featured an article critical of the Triratna Buddhist Order and Community. As senior members of Triratna, we wanted to respond to some of the content, and to the general areas of concern raised around the conduct of members of the Order as they relate to the wellbeing of anyone connecting with our community.

From Free Buddhist Audio on Mon, 22 Jul, 2019 - 14:00

Our FBA Dharmabyte today, Deeply Deluded, is by Mahamani from a talk entitled Mind Creates World given as part of the London Buddhist Centre’s week-long series exploring Mind Reactive / Mind Creative for the 2018 Urban Retreat.

There is a way to work with our mental states that takes us out of the reactive mode of being into progressive spiritual development. Our minds clouded by aversion, craving and delusion take us away...

Death of Ujuka

From Order Connection on Mon, 22 Jul, 2019 - 09:58

Dear Order Members,

Dharmacarini Ujuka died on Sunday 21st of July around 11.25am. She was 85 years old.

She had congestive heart failure. Her two daughters Sue and Cate were with her. Earlier that morning Gambhiraja, Viryadana, Cheryl and myself had dedicated a white Tara puja to her while sitting around her bed. I and Cheryl were looking out to sea when a goshawk flew over and towards us a couple of times about the time her body finally stopped...
