Setting up secure email for Safeguarding work

By ECA Safeguarding on Tue, 18 May, 2021 - 13:32

Standard email is not secure enough for our charities to satisfy data protection law when sharing the kind of very sensitive personal information we sometimes need to share in Safeguarding work - which is permitted by law specifically for addressing and preventing harm.

ProtonMail offers free secure email and it can be set up so that you receive an alert to your regular email any time you receive a new message in ProtonMail, so you don’t have to remember to check it. (See below for more...

Anglican Church in England and Wales makes significant Safeguarding reforms

Anglican Church in England and Wales makes significant Safeguarding reforms

By ECA Safeguarding on Tue, 18 May, 2021 - 09:38

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse’s investigation into the Anglican Church in England and Wales has led to the Church committing to significant reform. The law in England and Wales will also be amended to add religious leaders to the definition of ‘positions of trust’. This new law will make it a criminal offence for religious leaders and teachers to have sex with anyone under 18 who would be deemed to be ‘in their care’, even though the age of consent is...

2020 with the ECA Safeguarding team

By ECA Safeguarding on Fri, 9 Apr, 2021 - 16:01

Despite Triratna centres being mostly closed since March 2020 because of the pandemic, the work of the ECA’s Safeguarding team has continued. Here’s a short account of our work.

Since 2016 the Safeguarding team has provided a central place to report ethical concerns. We can be found in the Triratna section of the dropdown menu on the home page of The Buddhist Centre Online at www.thebuddhistcentre.com - or just by searching ‘safeguarding’ on TBCO.

Alongside continuing work on some historical...

The Church of England and independent Safeguarding

The Church of England and independent Safeguarding

By ECA Safeguarding on Wed, 31 Mar, 2021 - 09:51

Over the last few years there have sometimes been calls for Triratna’s Safeguarding to be overseen by a body outside Triratna. This report from the UK’s Church Times offers more insight into why this is nearly impossible for any UK organisation, so far at least.

In response to investigation of failures to prevent child sexual abuse over many decades the Church of England is seeking to ensure its Safeguarding services are provided by a body which cannot be ‘frustrated’...

Triratna Model Safeguarding Policies and Ethical Guidelines 2021

By ECA Safeguarding on Wed, 10 Mar, 2021 - 13:24

Here are Triratna’s model Ethical guidelines and policies for Safeguarding children and adults, updated for 2021 by Triratna’s ECA Safeguarding team.

(See below for more information on Safeguarding, the Safeguarding team, the Ethics Kula and the difference between Safeguarding matters and Matters of Order conduct.)

Safeguarding and ethical policies and procedures are a practical expression of ahimsa, non-harming, the value underlying Buddhist precepts and the Bodhisattva activity of protecting living beings from harm.

The model Ethical guidelines (first published in 2015 on the initiative of Triratna’s International Council) are an...

England and Wales: bill to make sex between faith leaders and 16-17 year olds an offence

England and Wales: bill to make sex between faith leaders and 16-17 year olds an offence

By ECA Safeguarding on Tue, 9 Mar, 2021 - 17:00

Under a bill announced today, faith leaders who have sexual relations with 16 and 17-year-olds in their care will be breaking the law under new legislation planned for England and Wales. This would apply to Order members who teach or have any other involvement with 16-17 year-olds in the context of Triratna activities, or any other context where they are acting as Order members.

The age of consent is 16, yet a person remains legally a child until 18. ‘Position of Trust’ law already...

Update on Safeguarding in the Anglican Church

By ECA Safeguarding on Thu, 4 Mar, 2021 - 10:29

In November we reported on IICSA’s public inquiry into failures to Safeguard children in the Church of England and Church in Wales, both part of the Anglican Church worldwide.

This week IICSA has published two brief updates on measures taken (or not taken) by those two Churches in response to recommendations made by IICSA.

Triratna’s ECA Safeguarding officer Munisha was called to testify as part of IICSA’s hearings in May 2020.

NBIICSA is not investigating cases of child sexual abuse...
