“Spreading wisdom and compassion in European societies”
April 13/14/15
Benalmádena, Malaga, Spain

The European Buddhist Union (EBU, www.europeanbuddhism.org) organises a conference event every 2 years. Following the “Buddhism in Action” conference in Berlin in 2016, there will be the another such event in April 2018.

The theme of the conference event is “Spreading wisdom and compassion in European societies”, with their specific socio-political, cultural and economic features.

New Triratna text for European Buddhist Union website

After many years of an old site with very out of date details for Triratna, here is the updated text on the member page of the European Buddhist Union’s new website.

Scroll down and find Triratna. One thing you may notice is that every other Buddhist organisation (bar one) has a logo. Not so with Triratna, where every centre or enterprise has its own. The kesa is our one single common visual element worldwide.

Hosted by the European Buddhist Union, this last weekend saw a gathering in Berlin of 50-90 Buddhists of many traditions, from over 15 countries across Europe, east and west. See pictures and responses to the weekend.

A full programme of talks and practice workshops offered a rather amazing view of the diversity of European Buddhism – as well as many common elements and themes: ageing sanghas, leadership succession questions, successful youth work…

The first - What is Triratna? - is a talk I gave to the European Buddhist Union in Berlin in September 2015.

The second - Triratna in the Buddhist world - was given to Triratna’s European Chairs’ Assembly (ECA) in January 2016.

Presenting Triratna to the European Buddhist Union meeting in Berlin in September, I mentioned Triratna’s recent success in attracting more young people. With most sanghas ageing, people wanted to know our secret.

One answer is that we appointed a Young Buddhist co-ordinator to encourage young Buddhist activities and help other young Buddhists develop the confidence to lead.

Last weekend I represented Triratna at the 40th Annual General Meeting of the European Buddhist Union. at the Rigpa Centre in Berlin.

At the particular request of Hungarian and Austrian Buddhists, a subgroup including me drafted a statement to be published in the name of the EBU: ‘A compassionate response to the European refugee crisis’.
