As we reported over the holidays, on 21st December 2016, Triratna’s founder Sangharakshita went into hospital suffering with pneumonia. At the age of 91 this could have been very serious; however, making a good recovery he was able to return home to Adhisthana on New Year’s Eve.

On 30th December he released this public statement to the Order, reflecting on aspects of his life and his relationship to Triratna:

International Council members woke today to the best kind of lush, golden Herefordshire summer morning: pigeons cooing; deep green oak trees in full leaf.

The day was devoted to the theme of conflict resolution and related matters. Dhammarati presented the document “What is a Triratna Buddhist Centre?” As the result of the Council’s first-ever worldwide consultation, this is a landmark.

“Ensuring the sexual, physical and psychological safety of young people and vulnerable adults involved in the activities of Triratna Buddhist Centres and other enterprises is an expression of the First Precept: the principle of non-harming, or love.”

So opens Triratna’s ‘Child protection general advice’ document for centres and enterprises in Europe, the introduction to a set of model policies developed over the last three years to help Triratna’s European Chairs meet their ethical and legal responsibilities to safeguard children and ‘vulnerable adults’.

Together in sangha, we’ll motivate our potential to tread more lightly on the Earth; to practice the third precept with joy; to delight in trying out new approaches.

“What would the Buddha do?” is explored through inspiring stories from the scriptures. Conversation, meditation and reflection will close off with a ritual. Please bring food for a shared vegan banquet if you can. Led by Suddhacandika and Maitridasa with support from the Karaniya Metta Kula.
