European Buddhist Union condemns abuse by Buddhist teachers

By Munisha on Thu, 10 Dec, 2020 - 09:21

Prompted by recent allegations of sexual misconduct on the part of Tibetan teacher Dagri Rinpoche, the European Buddhist Union has published this statement on misconduct by Buddhist teachers.

Triratna has been a very active member of the EBU for many years, sending a series of Liaison officers to its meetings, of which I am the latest. As part of EBU discussions of misconduct in several Buddhist organisations I have talked very openly about the controversial aspects of Triratna’s past. I...

Triratna reports from the European Buddhist Union meeting 2020

By Munisha on Fri, 25 Sep, 2020 - 10:16

As usual on the last weekend of September, the European Buddhist Union is holding its annual meeting - at Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa in Tuscany, Italy. Sadly most of the roughly 40 participants from many traditions all across Europe are on Zoom this time, for obvious reasons (and your trusty Liaison Officer, Munisha, is sitting in a little hut in Sweden.)

The morning has begun with a presentation from the hosts and the local mayor, followed by the...

European Buddhist gatherings 2019

By Munisha on Thu, 21 Nov, 2019 - 13:39

The end of September saw, as usual, the annual gatherings of the European Buddhist Union, and Buddhist Teachers in Europe.

This year the venue was Sangha Activa, a Spanish group in the Sakya lineage of the Vajrayana Tibetan tradition in the countryside an hour north of Barcelona. I attended both meetings as Triratna’s Liaison officer and Vajratara (who lives and works at Tiratanaloka) joined me for the Buddhist Teachers in Europe.

Sangha Activa several years ago took...

Voices from the Buddhist world 2: European Buddhist Union

By Munisha on Mon, 5 Nov, 2018 - 23:24

Continuing our series of messages of condolence from Buddhists beyond Triratna, here is a post from the Facebook page of the European Buddhist Union, of which Triratna has been an active member for many years.

“The EBU would like to express heartfelt condolences to the Triratna community, for the death of the founder of the Triratna Buddhist Order and the Triratna Buddhist Community.

Sangharakshita, who has passed away at the age of 93, was one of...

Munisha's Safeguarding talk to the European Buddhist Union 2018

By Munisha on Sun, 21 Oct, 2018 - 09:42

Triratna’s European Chairs’ Assembly employs me both as Triratna’s ‘Liaison officer’, responsible for co-operation with other Buddhist traditions, mainly in Europe. In that capacity I attend meetings of the European Buddhist Union and the Network of Buddhist Organisations UK.

+Follow this work at Triratna in the Buddhist World on TBCO.

As I am also Triratna’s overall Safeguarding officer, I gave a talk at the September 2018 meeting of the European Buddhist Union at Adhisthana, explaining the...

European Buddhists gather at Adhisthana

By Munisha on Sat, 20 Oct, 2018 - 21:51

The last weekend in September saw the annual gathering of the European Buddhist Union (EBU), this year hosted by Triratna at Adhisthana, followed as always by the annual meeting of the Buddhist Teachers in Europe (BTE).

For the EBU meeting, around 30 people from national Buddhist unions and individual Buddhist traditions across Europe, and including some young Buddhist guests, spent three days together, concentrating on two topics: 1) Young Buddhists and 2) preventing abuse in...

European Buddhist Union weekend 2017

By Munisha on Tue, 17 Oct, 2017 - 11:14

As the ‘Liaison Officer’ for Triratna’s European Chairs’ Assembly, I’m the person who looks after Triratna’s co-operation with other Buddhist traditions on matters of common interest. As part of this work, each September I attend the AGM weekend of the European Buddhist Union  (EBU) and the meeting of the Buddhist Teachers in Europe. This year both took place at the Benchen Katsang Retreat Centre just west of Warsaw, Poland. Next year will see them...

European Buddhist Union calls for compassion for refugees

By Munisha on Mon, 28 Sep, 2015 - 13:42

Last weekend I represented Triratna at the 40th Annual General Meeting of the European Buddhist Union. at the Rigpa Centre in Berlin.

At the particular request of Hungarian and Austrian Buddhists, a subgroup including me drafted a statement to be published in the name of the EBU: ‘A compassionate response to the European refugee crisis’.

“[We] call upon the governments and peoples of all European countries to show compassion and generosity to those displaced through war and seeking a refuge in Europe, safe from violence.

“As...
