Concepts are Doorways (Dharmabytes Podcast)

From Free Buddhist Audio on Thu, 22 Aug, 2024 - 12:47

We often talk about meditation as if it happens in our heads, and think we do it from the neck up. But the Sanskrit word citta translates as ‘heart-mind’ — there’s no distinction between what’s above and below the neck. Suryadarshini explores the paradox about how to talk about embodiment, how to cultivate awareness of the elements in our body, and how to be courageous and curious in communicating our experiences in meditation. From the talk Get...

Unlocking the Metta Bhavana

From Sheffield Buddhist Centre on Wed, 21 Aug, 2024 - 00:00
Join us this week to hear 3 short talks from Emma, Sanghajiva and Pretti on how they unlock The Metta Bhavana practice. In a famous passage in the Itivutakka The Buddha compares Metta to the radiance of the sun and moon. He says that metta ‘shines and burns and blazes forth in surpassing all other acts of good’ and that ‘Whoever sets their mind to make goodwill grow Boundless’ ...will become Enlightened! In this Sangha Night series we will be using another famous teaching on metta, The Karaniya Metta Sutta, to take a really good look at the Metta Bhavana practice, both on the cushion and in daily life. Over the coming weeks we will be asking ‘Can metta really be a path to Enlightenment?’ and we will come to realise that The Buddha’s path to liberation can also be seen as ‘Living with Kindness’.
