From Order Connection on Mon, 16 Dec, 2024 - 10:05

‘In The History of my Going for Refuge’ Bhante struggled for words to describe the self-transcending mutual awareness characteristic of true Spiritual Community: This is “not the sum total of the individual consciousnesses concerned, nor even a kind of collective consciousness, but a consciousness of an entirely different order.”

On our February Men’s Area Order Weekend, Saraha will share inspirations and practical reflections on the third order of consciousness and a symposium of speakers will share their thoughts...

Kathāvatthu - How Buddhists Should Debate

From Shabda Articles on Mon, 16 Dec, 2024 - 09:50

Some time ago Threads was suspended because a certain amount of harsh and divisive speech was being expressed in its pages, arising out of disagreements among the participants.

I have written two articles that I hope will contribute to our discussions about harmony in the Order, specifically relating to, although not exclusively, Threads. In this article I will examine what the Buddha said in the Pali suttas about discussions and debates - what kind we should avoid and what qualities are required to...

Homage to the Taiguer

From Suryavana Retreat Centre on Mon, 16 Dec, 2024 - 07:55

Sunday fun at Suryavana. For all you diesel heads out there. Ok it’s not a 1.6 litre turbocharged V6 whining and spinning at 15 000 rpm. It is has been backing up our batteries on the darkest of days here in the Wild West of Castellon at 1500 rpm. Homage to the Taiguer! Made in China in 2009 and received at the Masia in 2010 with spare parts on AliExpress!

8. Success and Failure In the Dharma Life: What Fails?

From Taraloka Retreat Centre on Fri, 13 Dec, 2024 - 00:00
Talk 8 of 8. A summary of living the Shin Buddhist perspective, and 'taking it home'. The Shin Buddhist path arises out of failure… but what fails? It’s the failure of delusion to get what it wants. When we see this rightly, what happens? We move our trust to what is reliable – our connection with ‘the golden light’, ‘Buddhaness’. And we remove our trust from what isn’t worthy of it – our ‘calculating mind’ that wants to get what it wants. Emerging from the failure of the ego to produce the desired self comes spiritual death and spiritual rebirth. For experienced Dharma practitioners.

5. Shinran: Ethics and Wisdom Inextricably Interlinked

From Taraloka Retreat Centre on Fri, 13 Dec, 2024 - 00:00
Talk 5 of 8. Unethical action only occurs because of the delusion of self. How can we bring clarity to the process of selfing, and step out of the ego-drama of ‘me as good’ and ‘me as bad’? As Sabhiya says of the Buddha in the Sutta Nipata: “Good and evil run off you, like water off a petal.” What if we engaged with ethics from a deeper place – in fact, from a wisdom perspective. For experienced Dharma practitioners.
