From Triratna News on Tue, 16 Jun, 2015 - 12:06

Where are the most Buddhists in England and Wales?

From Triratna News on Tue, 16 Jun, 2015 - 12:06

Numbers of Buddhists in England and Wales went up from 144,543 in 2001 to 247,743 in 2011 (0.4%) according to an overview recently published by the UK’s Office for National Statistics.

Use the interactive maps in the Overview to see Buddhist numbers area by area, including, interestingly, a rise in mid-Wales (but not the neighbouring county of Herefordshire in which Adhisthana is situated. The last census predates Triratna’s presence here.) The increase should not be interpreted simply as an increase...

The weight we need to lose is of our minds

The weight we need to lose is of our minds

From Eight Step Recovery - Using the Buddha's Teachings To Overcome Addiction on Sun, 14 Jun, 2015 - 05:06

I was asked to talk about weight loss - and I balked at the idea - and then I thought let me add to this dialogue - because as far as i am concerned  The weight we need to lose is of our minds, we carry so much crap around in our thoughts, that they weigh us down and trigger us to eat. And how sugar can really affect our moods. If we lose weight of our minds, our bodies will...

Padmavyuha continues, “The Triratna community is a very nourishing environment for many women and men practising the Dharma, but not everybody experiences themselves simply...

Vajradarshini is the new Chair of Triratna’s Stockholm Buddhist Centre.

She writes: “Last month the Stockholm sangha held its first LGBTQ (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer/questioning; known in Swedish as HBTQ) retreat, hoisting a rainbow flag at Dharmagiri, our retreat centre north of Stockholm. (Domestic flagpoles are standard in Sweden, flying a penant in the national colours of blue and yellow.) Fifteen Order members, mitras and friends gathered from Sweden, Finland and Norway to explore the way gender...

Is Western Buddhism the perfect ideological supplement to capitalism?!

From Buddhist Action Month 2015 on Sat, 13 Jun, 2015 - 10:30

…at least this is what Slavoj Zizek, a Slovenian philosopher and cultural critic who writes an occasional column for the Guardian newspaper in England, has suggested. Vaddhaka quotes him in his book ‘The Buddha On Wall Street’*:

“According to Zizek, what he calls ‘Western Buddhism’ is the ‘perfect ideological supplement’ to capitalism. He believes that the emphasis in ‘Western Buddhism’ on meditation encourages Buddhists to create an inner distance from the ‘mad dance’ of modern capitalism, to give up any attempt to...
