Public Ordinations Coming up at Padmaloka

From Padmaloka Retreat Centre on Thu, 17 Sep, 2020 - 15:54

In just over a week Padmaloka will be opening it’s gates to men coming on retreat here for the first time since March. In the past few weeks we’ve been finalising our hygiene procedures, dusting off the dorms and hoovering down the carpets - heaving the great Padmaloka bellows and bringing the flames back up to retreat ready temperatures - so to speak.

The first retreat here will be an Ordination retreat, for five men who were due to be Ordained in April:

  • Clive Fletcher
  • Chris Petts
  • Michael Procter
  • Alex Stirling
  • Mike Whittam

From Free Buddhist Audio on Thu, 17 Sep, 2020 - 14:00

The Bodhicaryavatara culminates with verses of sublime beauty expressing a deep and profound desire for the alleviation of suffering. Maitrisara evokes these verses with tenderness and delight, whilst also turning back to that tricky topic of hell.

From the talk entitled Dedication In the Bodhicaryavatara (6 of 6), part of the series The Bodhicaryavatara given at Birmingham Buddhist Centre, 2019.

Most of this is on the more complex end of what’s possible but hopefully it will interest some situations.

The video is a little over 18 minutes long and has:

Aryadasa and Vicki from Sheffield talking about the why and how they went about it

7:00 - Vicki shows us the actual equipment they use and how it’s set up

14:35 - Aryadasa describes a simpler, cheaper option

16:45 - a few shots of it in action at their Sangha night

17:50 - a sense of how they set things up in Brixton

Notice of the Adhisthana Kula Report: Addressing Ethical Issues in Triratna

From Adhisthana Kula on Tue, 15 Sep, 2020 - 21:57

The Adhisthana Kula arose from a wish to acknowledge openly and respond effectively to issues from Triratna’s past. The members of the Kula worked together over the course of nearly four years to review historical difficulties in our community and find ways to address their lasting consequences. Towards the end of 2019, we published an update on the Adhisthana Kula webspace, stating an intention to summarise the work, making it clear what had been done so far and outlining next steps. It was a complex...

This Precious Opportunity

From North London Buddhist Centre on Tue, 15 Sep, 2020 - 00:00
The first of a series on the 4 reminders, given live at the North London Buddhist Centre, 12 Sept 2020. 1. Our life as a human being is a precious opportunity. 2. Everything changes, and death is inevitable, so don’t lose your opportunities. 3. You do make a difference, the way you live and act now will change the future for yourself and for the world. 4. Ordinary habitual or self-centred life is a trial for everyone, so live a meaningful life, take your opportunities, make a difference! Everyone can liberate themselves. What is so special about human awareness, and what particular advantages make it 'precious'? Ratnaprabha shows how we can see the huge value of what life is offering right now, and take this opportunity to commit to practice.

Become One Person, Become No Person - Perfect Samadhi

From North London Buddhist Centre on Tue, 15 Sep, 2020 - 00:00
Budcast talk, Saturday 8 August 2020. Nandaraja explains how Perfect Samadhi (meditation, or better, unification of mind) completes the Buddha's 8-fold Path. "Samadhi is a higher state of consciousness that is not fettered by concepts, ideas or language. All the previous seven limbs of the Eightfold Path come together, and Perfect Samadhi is both supported by and supports them, integrating them into a holistic system of interconnectedness that dissolves clinging and yields a renunciation of the roots of suffering."
